What makes us different...
31 Aug 2012
As cookery and a passion for food becomes more popular we are seeing an increase in cookery schools and courses across the country. But we're not like other cookery schools, here's why...
Jamie Oliver, Simon Rimmer, Nigella Lawson, James Martin...the list of celebrity chefs is endless. And as cookery programmes continue to grow in popularity and being able to cook becomes more fashionable, we are seeing cookery schools and courses pop up all over the country.
But Tideswell School of Food isn't like other cookery schools - although we are a professionally run establishment with superb facilities, we are part of the wider Taste Tideswell project, a community led social enterprise that strives to revive the local economy by employing local people, supporting the local retailers and providing food education to people of all ages.
Education
We are passionate about sharing our knowledge of food, cookery and growing your own produce. That's why we employ an Education Officer to engage with school children from Key Stage 1 & 2 all the way through to A-level at Key Stage 5. Our education programme is designed to cover all areas of the National Curriculum and with our flexible approach; we can design workshops to meet your curriculum objectives. Find out more about our Education Programme here.
Supporting the local retailers
Where possible, Tideswell School of Food purchases all produce for our cookery courses from local food retailers. Our fruit, vegetables and herbs come from the village green grocer, Peaches. Our milk and dairy products are provided by Tideswell's Peak District Dairy. Our meat is from the catering butchers down the road in Eyam, Pursgloves. And our Fish and Game is provided by Buxton's fishmonger RG Morris and Son.
We hope that by supporting our local retailers we will help to revive the food economy in Tideswell and the surrounding areas.
Community Garden
The Community Kitchen Garden is the ‘GROW IT’ part of the Taste Tideswell project. It is an open access space for local people - anyone who may not have a garden, or would like to start growing but needs a confidence booster, or perhaps waiting for an allotment to become available. The garden is run by a group of volunteers from the village and new faces are always welcome to help with weeding, watering, planning, planting, feeding, and harvesting. The community garden is also used to support our education programme and courses at the Tideswell School of Food. Find out more about the Community Garden here.
The Taste Tideswell project and the Tideswell School of Food have been successfully running courses and supporting our local community since December 2010 and with your support we hope to continue to do so for years to come!
